Announcing the Measuring by Light – Composites Workshop

We are excited to announce the Measuring by Light – Composites Workshop, which will take place during Measuring By Light 2025 in collaboration with the EU COMP-ECO Twinning Project (ID:101079250). This half-day workshop promises to deliver valuable insights and hands-on demonstrations on the use of optical inspection technologies in composite materials, presented by leading experts in the field.

Workshop Schedule

Introduction and Welcome (15 minutes)

Prof. Groves will open the workshop with an introduction and an overview of the importance of optical measurement techniques in composite materials research and industry.

Key Presentations

  • Design of Composite Materials and Structures (30 minutes)
    Prof. Otto Bergsma, TU Delft
    Prof. Bergsma will present innovative approaches to the design of composite materials and structures, highlighting recent advancements and research outcomes.
  • Challenges in the Optical Inspection of Composites (30 minutes)
    Prof. Mathias Kersemans, University of Ghent, Belgium
    Prof. Kersemans will explore the key challenges in the optical inspection of composite materials, focusing on the complexities and opportunities in current technologies.
  • Aerospace Applications of Optical Inspection Technology (30 minutes)
    Prof. Krzysztof Dragen, Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), Poland
    Prof. Dragen will discuss the use of optical inspection technologies in aerospace applications, emphasizing how these techniques improve quality and reliability in the industry.

Panel Discussion (30 minutes)
Chaired by Prof. Roger Groves
The panel discussion will bring together all speakers for an engaging session of Q&A and dialogue with the audience, fostering collaboration and idea exchange.

Hands-On Demonstrations (60 minutes)

Following the presentations and discussion, participants will have the opportunity to engage in two parallel demonstration sessions:

  • Demonstration of Shearography Technology for Composite Inspection (30 minutes)
    Hosted by TU Delft, this demonstration will showcase the application of shearography in detecting flaws and defects in composite materials.
  • Demonstration of LDV Technology for Ultrasonic Inspection (30 minutes)
    Co-hosted by AFIT and TU Delft, this session will highlight the use of Laser Doppler Vibrometry (LDV) technology for ultrasonic inspection of composites.
